James McMurtrie

Profile

The inherent characteristic of James McMurtrie’s glass making practice stems from a long connection to the Grampians landscape, growing up in Stawell on his family’s farm and now witnessed from his architecturally designed, purpose built glass studio in Pomonal. Surrounded by the sights, sounds and smells of Australian bushland, this natural environment has become a primary influence on his work. Upon graduation from Ballarat Grammar, James completed a Bachelor of Art, majoring in hot glass at the Chislom Institute of Technology (Monash University) in 1992. Over the following years he found mentors in renowned and well respected glass artists Don Wreford and Richard Morrell, both of whom were instrumental in introducing James to the professional practices as a glass maker. James’ professional practice produces two distinct areas of work. A range of high quality production glassware, including platters, vases and bowls. This work is made with function in mind, while incorporating contemporary design and colours. The second area is of a sculptural nature and allows James to express his creative vision on a regular basis. His work can be found throughout Australia and in private collections around the world.
